BayerEquineConnection.com - Joint Disease: Cartilage Degradation

Cartilage Degradation

Non-infectious Synovitis is a progressive process. Left untreated, the activated leukocytes and inflamed synovial membrane release enzymes within the joint cavity, eroding the cartilage and eventually in the final stages of osteoarthritis, proceeding to significant damage to the articular cartilage.

Once damaged, articular cartilage does not repair itself. Instead, the damage progresses and develops into osteoarthritis. The osteoarthritis cannot be corrected, only managed, and often leads to the retirement or destruction of the horse. Therefore, therapeutic objectives include limiting inflammation and blocking the release of destructive inflammatory mediators early in the course of the disease, before joint damage progresses to irreparable destruction of cartilage.

Treat early before cartilage damage occurs.
